Be More Active
How much physical activity you need in your life depends mostly on your age but in general adults require 150 minutes of being more active every week. That means both aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening activity like EMS training. The case for moving more is compelling. Maintaining a healthy weight, more energy and more mental health stability are just some of the benefits that exercise offers. And those benefits are big for everyone regardless of age, gender or physical ability. If you want to enjoy life and add years to that life, you need to be more active. So, any tips as to how you can be more active?
Tips for Being More Active
Being more active doesn’t have to be difficult, you just need to incorporate these tips into your daily life:
- Walk or cycle some or all of your journey to and from work or on any short trip.
- If you’re driving to work or going shopping in the car, park as far as possible from the entrance so you have to walk further.
- Take the stairs as often as you can, even if it’s just a few steps.
- Clean your house more often. Cleaning involves walking, lifting, and stretching, all useful types of exercise.
- Go for a walk or cycle with a friend rather than sitting down for a coffee.
- Go for a short walk after eating. Not only is this gentle exercise but a stroll helps you digest those calories more efficiently.
- Set an alarm on your phone so you’re moving every 30 minutes, even if it’s just standing up from your desk.
- Go for a lunchtime stroll instead of sitting at your desk after you’ve eaten your lunch.
- Garden more. Pulling weeds, raking leaves or trimming the hedge are all great forms of activity using a range of muscles.
- Exercise in front of the TV even if it’s just five press-ups during the ad breaks.
Being More Calorie Aware
We know that consuming fewer calories than you burn leads to weight loss so being aware of calories is so important. It’s useful to have a general idea of how many calories you need to achieve your weight management goals and which foods are more helpful in reaching that target. But how do you do that?
How to Be More Calorie Aware
How many calories a day do you need to maintain a healthy weight? That depends on multiple factors including age, body size, and activity level. In general, women need 1500-2000 calories per day while men require 2000-2500 calories per day. Here are some simple tips on how you can be more calorie aware:
- Be aware of not just how many calories are going into your body but also how many calories are going out. If you’re more active you’ll be expending more energy and using more calories.
- Limit the portion size of your meals. That doesn’t mean you have to put teeny amounts of food on your plate or count the peas you’ve having with your meal. But dishing up a smaller portion automatically limits the number of calories you’re consuming. A top tip is to use smaller plates for every meal. Even if the amount of food you’re eating is smaller the plate will look full, making you feel full up when you’ve finished.
- Don’t eat while you’re distracted. Eating mindfully, paying attention to what you’re eating rather than looking at the TV or scanning your phone stops you from overeating. You’ll naturally eat more slowly, aiding your digestion but also giving your stomach time to signal that it’s had enough.
- Don’t beat yourself up if you have a ‘naughty’ calorie-laden meal. It’s more important to be consistently calorie aware then trying to achieve perfection every day. Nobody’s perfect all the time!
